The time it takes to charge an EV with a DC fast charger varies based on several factors. Typically, a DC fast charger can take an EV’s battery from 10% to 80% in 20 to 60 minutes. The exact time depends on:
Charger Power: Your product offers up to 240kW of power, which allows for very fast charging speeds in theory.
EV’s Charging Capability: The car’s battery size and its maximum charging rate (e.g., some EVs can only accept up to 150kW or 50kW) are the main limiting factors.
Battery’s State of Charge & Temperature: Charging is fastest when the battery is at a low state of charge and slows down significantly after 80%. Battery temperature also affects charging speed.
This depends on the charger’s connector. Tesla vehicles in North America primarily use the NACS (North American Charging Standard) connector. Your product supports both NACS and CCS1 interfaces, which means Tesla owners can directly use your charger for DC fast charging without needing an adapter.
DC fast chargers are more expensive than AC chargers due to their complex technology and high power requirements.
High-Power Conversion: They must convert high-power three-phase AC electricity (like the 208V or higher your product uses) into DC power. This process requires expensive transformers, rectifiers, and cooling systems.
Intelligent Management: The chargers contain complex software and hardware for managing grid connections, billing systems, remote monitoring, and battery communication.
Infrastructure Costs: Beyond the charger unit, installing a DC fast charger requires specialized electrical wiring and infrastructure upgrades to handle the high power demand.
DC fast charging refers to the direct delivery of DC power to an EV’s battery, bypassing the car’s internal AC-to-DC converter. In the U.S., this is often called Level 3 charging. It typically provides at least 50kW of power or more. Our product range (60kW-240kW) fully qualifies as a DC fast charger, designed for commercial applications where quick turnaround is essential.
While theoretically possible, it is not recommended to install a DC fast charger at home due to several major hurdles. DC fast chargers require a high-power three-phase electrical supply, which the vast majority of residential homes lack, as they only have low-power single-phase electricity. The installation cost is also extremely high, requiring expensive upgrades to your home’s electrical system and grid connection. For residential use, a Level 2 AC charger (typically 7kW-11kW) is a much more cost-effective and practical solution.
